St James the Great Catholic Church in Peckham wasn't Jim's first club, but it is where we stepped onto the mat and where the story began. That humble church hall in South London saw the blood, sweat, and tears that forged a camaraderie still going strong today.
Since the club closed its doors in Peckham, the sport of Judo has evolved. Of the 40 original Gokyo throwing techniques we learned under Jim, five were removed from competition and—by attrition—are naturally no longer taught.
We continue to teach and practice the original 40 as we were taught by him. While we appreciate why they were removed from the sporting arena, we feel their absence is where Judo has lost ground to disciplines like BJJ. By preserving these techniques, we remain true to the club's ethos.

We have set a target of running 2 pop-up classes in 2026
