This policy outlines the technical standards for all sessions conducted under the Association’s banner.
Purpose
To ensure all Judo activities are performed in a manner that respects the health and safety of participants while preserving the integrity of traditional techniques.
Core Principles
- Qualified Instruction: All sessions must be led by a Dan Grade instructor recognized by the St James Judo Association who holds valid Insurance, First Aid, and DBS.
- The "Jim Byrne" Ethos: Practice is conducted with mutual respect (Jita Kyoei). Excessive force or malicious intent is grounds for immediate removal.
- Physical Readiness:
- Warm-up: Every session begins with a 15-minute progressive warm-up focusing on joint mobility and cardiovascular readiness.
- Breakfalls (Ukemi): No student shall perform or receive a throw until they have demonstrated proficiency in Ukemi.
- Mat Safety:
- Area: Only industry-standard Tatami or high-density foam mats are to be used.
- Perimeter: A "safety zone" of at least 1 meter should be maintained between the edge of the mats and any hard surfaces/walls.
- Hygiene: Mats must be cleaned with antiseptic before/after use. No footwear or jewellery is allowed on the mats; no bare feet are allowed off the mats.
- Medical & Concussion:
- Any head impact requires immediate removal from the mat. We follow the "If in doubt, sit them out" protocol.
- Students must declare any pre-existing injuries or medical conditions (e.g., asthma, epilepsy) before the session begins.
