Syllabus - Draft

  

SJJA Syllabus: Phase 1 (The Foundation)

This document defines the "Old School" requirements. It ignores modern IJF sport rules in favour of traditional efficiency.

  

Level 1: Novice to Yellow/Orange (6th & 5th Kyu)

Focus: Safety, breakfalls, and the first "big" throws.

  • Ukemi:  Mastery of Mae-ukemi (Front), Yoko-ukemi (Side), and Ushiro-ukemi     (Back).
  • Tachi-waza (Standing):
    • O-goshi      (Major Hip Throw)
    • Ippon Seoi-nage (One-arm Shoulder Throw)
    • O-soto-gari      (Major Outer Reap)
  • Newaza  (Ground): Kesa-gatame and Mune-gatame (holding and escaping).


Level 2: Green to Blue (4th & 3rd Kyu)

Focus: Movement, combinations, and the introduction of leg picks.

  • Tachi-waza:
    • Tai-otoshi      (Body Drop)
    • Uchi-mata      (Inner Thigh Throw)
    • The Re-integrated "Old School" Tech: * Morote-gari      (Double Leg Reap)
      • Sukui-nage  (Scooping Throw)
  • Newaza: Introduction to Shime-waza (Chokes/Strangles) and Kansetsu-waza     (Arm-locks).


Level 3: Brown (2nd & 1st Kyu)

Focus: Counters, transitions, and classical hand techniques.

  • Tachi-waza:
    • Tomoe-nage  (Circle Throw)
    • Ura-nage   (Back Throw)
    • The Re-integrated "Old School" Tech:
      • Kuchiki-taoshi  (Single Leg Takedown/Dead Tree Drop)
      • Kibisu-gaeshi  (Heel Trip)
      • Kata-guruma  (The original Fireman’s Carry—with the leg grab)
  • Kata: Demonstration of the first three sets of Nage-no-Kata.


Level 4: Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt)

Focus: Complete technical mastery and the Jim Byrne philosophy.

  • Examination:  A full demonstration of the Gokyo no Waza (all 40 classical throws).
  • Special Requirement: Ability to demonstrate a "forbidden" technique  (Leg Grab) and its direct counter.
  • Philosophy:   A verbal discussion on the history of the club and the charitable mission.



 

Affiliation & Governance

St James Judo Club is a founding member of the St James Judo Association (SJJA).

Our technical standards and grading syllabus are formally governed by the Association to ensure the preservation of the original 40 Gokyo techniques. St James Judo Association is a trade name of 55 Spears Ltd.
